VARIATIONS
Headlights are either sealed beam or halogen. Sealed beam headlights appear on older model cars. These headlights are actually a combination electrical connector, filament, and glass lens filled with inert gas. There is no separate bulb to change. When it burns out, the whole unit must be replaced.
SEALED BEAM HEADLIGHTHalogen light bulbs, however, can be separated from the headlamp body and replaced as needed. These bulbs are filled with halogen gas that allows the filament to burn brighter, thus creating a stronger light beam than the ordinary sealed beam headlight does.
HALOGEN BULBLight bulbs may be single filament or double filament.
DOUBLE FILAMENT BULBHeadlight bulbs may be double filament to provide both high and low beams from the same headlight. Other bulbs that operate exterior and interior lights vary greatly in design.
Lamp bulbs are designated by trade numbers. The trade number is sufficient to identify the bulb style and wattage. Trade numbers are two, three or four digits, like 98, 192 or 9004. Be certain the replacement bulb meets the vehicle manufacturer's specification and has the same trade number as the bulb being replaced. The part number should be stamped on the metal base of the bulb.
